Network Layers

In modern networks, we use hierarchical design to group network appliances into multiple nets that are organized in a layered approach. This design contains small nets that allow local traffic to remain local. Only traffic that is destined for other nets is moved to another network segment.

The hierarchical design offers better efficiency, better functionality and better speed. It permits the network to expand as required since extra local nets can be added without negatively affecting the performance of the existing ones. This design has three basic layers: The Access Layer, The distribution Layer, The core Layer.

The companies that use the hierarchical design also need the Internet Protocol (IP) addressing scheme that can identify the location of a host. An individual’s name typically does not change. On the other hand, an individual’s address can change very often.

On a network appliance, the media access control address or physical address does not change. However, the IP address or logical address is similar to the address of a person. This address is assigned logically based on where the network appliance is placed. We can assign an IP address manually or dynamically.

IP addresses have two parts. The first part pinpoints the local network and the second part pinpoints the individual computer. The network portion of the IP address must be the same for all hosts connected to the same local net. The host portion of the logical address must be unique to each host that belongs to the same local network.

Access Layer

The Access Layer offers a connection socket for end user computers to the net and lets multiple computers to connect to other computers through a network appliance like a hub or switch. Usually, all hosts within a single Access Layer have the same network ID.

Distribution Layer

The Distribution Layer offers a connection socket for different networks and regulates the flow of messages between the networks. It usually has more powerful devices than the Access Layer plus routers for routing between networks. This layer controls the type and amount of network traffic that moves from the Access Layer to the Core Layer.

Core Layer

The Core Layer or backbone layer contains high-speed network switches and routers. It is responsible for transferring large amounts of data between different networks. Core Layer switches are very powerful and very expensive. This layer is concerned with speed and ensures reliable delivery of packets. Core switches and routers are usually the most powerful in the network.
